Hiking – A Natural Way to Relieve Tension by Darrin Tebbe
In a number of ways hiking can be considered a natural way to relieve stress. When you hear the word “hiking” your mind conjures up visions of sylvan woods and scenic mountain trails. Hiking can be a great way to exercise and can also give your mind a chance to escape into the peaceful world of nature.
Hiking is often much better than your average jog or walk. All your muscles are typically used as you will be doing strenuous exercise on trails that take you up and down hills and rugged terrain. When you take hiking seriously you will be giving your muscles and heart a good workout. This is because you will be encountering different land gradients, with obstacles to go around and under. There is a good reason why hiking can be so much more enjoyable than jogging or walking in the city. You will get fresh air to your lungs and body when you go out in the country.
If the terrain is not hazardous then the whole family can enjoy hiking together. A variety of birds, plants, trees and animals can be observed. Kids can get rid of their pent up energy and everyone can get involved. The experiences they gather can be discussed for a long time.
Proper equipment should be taken along and the right clothes should be worn. Because of changes in temperature and weather your clothing needs to be adaptable. You may consider wearing apparel that can be taken off or put on as you and the weather permit. Zip off pants are a good choice as the legs can be taken off when you are hot or put on when you cool off. A light jacket in your backpack or fanny pack might also be considered.
A thick pair of socks is a good idea to protect your feet as well as a pair of sturdy shoes suitable for rugged terrain. A water bottle is also useful so that you do not become dehydrated.
In case of accidents or insect bites it is wise to carry a first aid kit. A cell phone is also a good precaution, in case of emergencies.
To track the amount of exercise you are getting, you may consider using a pedometer. Due to all the scenic wonders it may be easy to lose track of exactly how much exercise you are really doing. Your hiking experience will probably be enhanced by using a pedometer. This is another advantage of exercising outdoors.
